Overview of 'Successful Web Pages' HTML Tutorial - Using Titles, Meta Tags, Keywords and Descriptions
|
How search engines work
1. Search engines look for
relevant URL,s (stands for Uniform Resource Locater, and really means the web address), followed by Page Titles (Not the File Name which must always be index.htm for your first file.), then keywords, and finally the text in the body of the Page.
2. They then list results as - The Title, followed by (Some) the Description or (Others) the start of the Body text.
3. So there are two basic choice mechanisms at work. One - The search engine ranks and then lists your page according to it's own internal rules. Two - You, the inquirer, select which page to look at based on what is listed on the screen as the page title and description.
4. A successful page then must first meet search engine requirements, secondly have a title and description that will attract your eye, and lastly, must be easy to understand and be interesting and relevant to the viewer.
